I worked out the story first and then I was put in contact with a friend of a friend who was a homicide detective for LA County Sheriff's, named Stan White. (Note: This interview contains a discussion of the film's finale, but keeps the details vague.) Speaking to GQ by phone, Hancock discussed that latest twist, The Little Things' long road to release, and why the final act has to play out the way it does. The film, starring Denzel Washington as Deacon, Rami Malek as Baxter, and Jared Leto as the man they suspect of the slayings, debuted in theaters and on HBO Max last week-the second film, after the Christmas debut of Wonder Woman 1984, released as part of Warner Bros.' new direct-to-streaming strategy. It looked like an overnight success story but was actually the product of years of work in Hollywood after Hancock decided to give up practicing law in Texas to focus on his passion. The film stars Eastwood and Kevin Costner, both of whom Hancock would collaborate with again, and helped Hancock become an in-demand screenwriter. Released in 1993 and directed by Clint Eastwood, the meditative crime film A Perfect World depicts a manhunt across Hancock's native Texas that doubles as both a coming-of-age story and study in moral ambiguity. ![]() John Lee Hancock made his debut as a writer and director with the little-seen 1991 film Hard Time Romance, but it was his second produced screenplay that made his name.
